Course Outline

This course includes the grammar, phonology, and methodology modules in the 120-hour Advanced TESOL Certificate course, the 20-hour TEYL specialist, and a 130-TEFL package that includes training, reflective essay-writing skills, scholarly research skills, Teaching Business English, Teaching Large Classes, Teaching One-to-One, and Teaching English Online.

Students can enrol the 20-Hour Teaching Practicum at CAD$350 upon completion of 270-hour Master TEFL Certificate with TEYL Specilization.

Accreditation for TESOL Distance Education Courses (ACTDEC)
ACTDEC is an independent body whose function is to provide frameworks and accreditation structures for providers of ELT teacher training through online or blended provision. This mission is motivated by recognition of the need for such globally available provision to be measured and monitored for the benefit of course providers, employers and students.

Graduates can also receive an ACTDEC certificate when they register with ACTDEC and pay a CAD$85 fee.

Module 6: Teaching English Online

FREE 20-hour Teaching English To Young Learners (TEYL) Module

The 20-hour TEYL module has been carefully developed to address the needs of young learners. This course reviews the most effective approaches for teaching grammar and pronunciation, shows trainees how to analyze a TEYL textbook, and provides practical training on how to use the Task-based Learning approach via a major lesson plan assignment.

20-hour TEYL Specialist Module Syllabus

Module 1: First Language Acquisition

In this chapter you will learn about First Language Acquisition theories, concepts like imitation and habit formation, and how they have influenced Second Language Learning. This chapter also talks about the development of inflections and the grammatical development of children.

Module 2: Behaviorism and First Language Acquisition

In this chapter you will read about Behaviourism and language learning mechanisms and theoretical approaches that explain First Language Acquisition.

Module 3: Language Learning versus Acquisition

In this chapter you will learn the difference between “’learning” a language and ‘acquiring’ a language and which one will be more appropriate to use with young learners. You will analyze two sample lesson plans and identify their strengths and weaknesses.

Module 4: Approaches to Language Learning

In this chapter you will revise the main approaches to language learning that you studied in the Ontesol’s TESOL certification courses, and how effective these methods could be with young learners. After a brief review of these approaches, you will be introduced to the difference between Communicative Language Learning and Task-based Learning and how they can be applied to young learners.

Module 5: Teaching Grammar to Young Learners

In this chapter you will be introduced to lesson development and ideas on how to teach grammar to kids. It will also introduce you to samples of topic-centered syllabi for Kindergarten and Primary school. You will analyze an ESL textbook for kids and identify the approaches and techniques used in the textbook. This knowledge will prepare you for designing your own course.

Module 6: Planning a TEYL Class

In this chapter, you will learn how to create lesson plans considering the different approaches seen in previous chapters. Step by step instructions including the main characteristics of the following lesson planning formats: PPP, TTT, TBL.

Module 7: Teaching Pronunciation to Young Learners

In this chapter you will review the basic concepts of phonology that you have studied in the Ontesol’s TESOL certification courses, including vowel and consonant sounds, word and sentences stress and intonation. The chapter includes lots of ideas for teaching pronunciation to kids, including rhymes, songs, and pronunciation games.

Module 8: Storytelling in the ESL Classroom

This chapter introduces you to the fascinating world of Storytelling and how to use it in the ESL classroom. You will learn different techniques and how to integrate the listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills as well as grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation to the ESL classroom through Storytelling.
