FAQs

TEFL, TESOL and CELTA are often used interchangeably. TESOL and TEFL are the most popular terms when talking about teacher training courses in Hong Kong and worldwide for young learners, while CELTA is a specific brand of TESOL course operating under the umbrella of Cambridge University focusing on Teaching Adults.

Although it is possible to teach abroad without a TEFL / TESOL certificate, the majority of schools in Hong Kong now require teachers to be TEFL / TESOL qualified and certified, especially if the teacher doesn’t already hold a degree or holds a degree from another field. Many countries now require teachers to be TEFL / TESOL certified as well.

It’s fair to say that most schools in all countries have hiring ‘preferences’ for people with college degrees (Bachelors). However, there are still a few part time teaching opportunities around the world and in Hong Kong with schools that do not demand college degrees but the teacher has good teaching strategies and experience.

Having some knowledge of the local language may be beneficial when teaching English aboard but it is not a must. Most of the countries such as Hong Kong and China require the teacher to conduct classes in English only.

Native English speaking is highly preferred in Hong Kong and other Asian countries. Fluent English speakers can also find jobs in Hong Kong. The Immigration Department in Hong Kong will issue teaching visas to native English speakers with passports from the particular English speaking countries.

In general, once you have earned your certificate, it is permanent.

Although some schools and even countries require teachers to have prior experience and references, there are still many opportunities for first time English teachers.

Salaries vary by school type, responsibilities and teacher credentials. Please refer to the recruitment FAQs for further information.

There isn’t a simple answer to this question as it depends on what your needs are. Online TEFL / TESOL courses provide fast track options to acquire a certification, while In-Class certifications provides extra hours of class observation and practicum.

Research is the key of success. Check if the provider is long established and what are their options available. Also check which if the courses have been accredited and whether the modules meet your needs.
